It's Giveaway Time!

Before I cut to the chase, let me tell you about my first weekend in the Archaeology Technician program at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Friday nights are educational sessions in the library. And Saturdays? They're all about fieldwork under the vast desert sky. It's quite the drive to reach my destination, with the last 10 miles on serpentine mountain roads. Here's an overview of how our first weekend went.

📌 Learning to Drop Pins: We used the Avenza mapping app, and went on a scavenger hunt, where we learned how to pin locations and send the data to our group lead. We'll be able to drop pins when we discover clues in the field.

🔍 Rethinking Rocks: We learned how to identify rocks that were used as tools and as grinding stones, making me wonder how many culturally significant rocks I've walked by on my journey.

🚙💨 4-Wheel Driving to the Site: The moment I have to slip my Jeep into 4-wheel is a happy time for me. We bumped away along a narrow rocky road to get to our observation site. Fun!

🤝 Finding "My People": This is my first real foray back into group activities since COVID turned our worlds virtual. The California Climate Steward program was primarily online, limiting most of our contact to Zoom screens. Here, we get to meet in person and have a common bond of nature and history. I've stumbled upon a treasure trove of like-minded souls – nerdy, witty, and insatiably curious.

🌱 Back to Nature: Last week, I shared my work obsession and weekly schedule. This program is my ticket back to nature, my escape from the digital bind. It's an excellent prompt to escape work and get "lost" in the desert.
